Bwindi impenetrable national park is found in 4 districts; Rubanda, Kabale, Kanungu and Kisoro. It is located at the rim of the western Great Rift Valley in southwest direction of Uganda. The forest is one of the few forest found in Africa that flourished through the last Ice Age and covers approximately 331 sq. km. It shelters steep landscape, high slippery valleys, drought ridges and thick forest with under growth vegetation.

This park accommodates half of the world’s mountain gorilla population and it is the main gorilla safari destination in Uganda and undoubtedly in the world. Looking into the eyes of the mountain gorilla is unquestionably the most magnificent and unforgettable wildlife safari encounter in Uganda. It features 90 species of mammals, including primates, elephants and abundant birdlife.

Bwindi impenetrable rain forest’s main attraction are the critically endangered mountain gorillas. Other notable species include, up to 30 elephants as well as 120 mammal species among which 7 are diurnal primates.

The forest shelters more than 340 bird species and colorful butterflies, the afro montane rain forest which possesses a thick undergrowth of shrubs, ferns plus vines and more than 324 species of trees recorded there, among which 10 cannot be found elsewhere in Uganda except Bwindi.

Mountain gorilla trekking is the most interesting and sought after activity in Bwindi national park and a number of travelers enjoy it while on a tour in Uganda. The park has 12 habituated gorilla families which are open to visitors for trekking every day.

The gorilla permits are sold at the headquarters of Uganda wildlife Authority and only 8 people are allowed to trekking each gorilla group per day, and prior booking is advised at least 2 months in advance or earlier in order to avoid losing out. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi begins at 8am and lasts between 2-8 hours, but travelers are allowed to spend only an hour with the gorillas when they meet them.

Bwindi impenetrable national park is one of the birding destinations in Uganda with more than 340 bird species that are hard to find elsewhere in East Africa. Some of the unique bird species that are only found in Bwindi include Dusky crimson, honey guide, bar-tailed trogon, the wing, warbler, white-tailed blue monarch and many others.
