10 Things to Do in Uganda Beyond Gorilla Trekking

A trip to East Africa is incomplete without a stopover in Uganda “The Pearl of Africa”. This remarkable destination differentiates itself with abundant attractions, favorable climatic conditions, stable security, impeccable hospitality services and hospitable locals. It is known to most travelers around the globe because of its memorable gorilla trekking tours, but there are other several captivating pursuits to include in your Uganda safari as explained below.

Rhino Tracking in Ziwa; Rhinoceros are amongst the wild animals that make up the African big fives. They are unique and very difficult to hunt on foot. Located in Nakasongola, central Uganda, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the best place to see Rhinos. There is no better place to encounter countless views of these grazers than tracking them at Ziwa. The tracking session lasts for about one hour, with one expecting to sight these animals as they graze. Make sure to carry a good quality camera to capture these game grazing.

Visit Ngamba Island Chimp Sanctuary; Established mainly to provide home to the rescued orphaned chimps, Ngamba Island is a must visit. It is located on an Island that is part of Koome group of Islands on Lake Victoria. A visit to this sanctuary include chimpanzee viewing feeding and some bird watching. This sanctuary can only be accessed through a boat.

Kampala City Tour; Kampala, the capital of Uganda is packed with a number of appealing spots that are hard to omit for anyone interested in Uganda’s top draws. Some of these allures are; Kasubi tombs, Uganda museum, Uganda martyrs shrines Namugongo, Rubaga and Namirembe cathedral, Gadhafi mosque, Bahai temple, Art galleys and the local craft markets. A customized city tour will combine a few or all of these places depending on one’s interests.

Golden Monkey trekking; Are you a primate lover? If so, one of the others primates activities you should not miss in Uganda is the Golden monkey tracking. This expedition grants one an opportunity to encounter a monkey species known as the Golden monkeys in the Jungles. They are mostly found in the mountainous bamboo forested areas; therefore physical fitness is a must for any participants. In Uganda, Golden monkeys are only found in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. It’s no surprise that this is the only place to go for this adventure.

Launch trip cruises; If forest walks, city tours, game drives do not appeal to you, no worries. As Uganda is also famous for its breathtaking boat cruises. From the boat, views of riverside scenery, wildlife, aquatic species, sun set/rise and blue skies are inspirational. Some of the best places to check out this incredible experience include; Kazinga channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park, River Nile in Murchison Falls National park, Jinja along the waters of river Nile, and on Lake Victoria.

Chimpanzee trekking; If an encounter with the chimpanzees sounds like something you are interested in.  Chimpanzee trekking is the best activity for you. It includes treks via trails that traverse the Jungles, this lasts until you find the chimps. Usually a period of about one hour is allowed for viewing these chimps. This excursion is not only about trekking the chimps, but you are also exposed to several monkey species and plants within the Jungle. There are several places that offer this encounter, although Kibale Forest National Park is exceptional.

White Water rafting; When you talk about Uganda, the first thing to come into most travelers’ minds is Wildlife, but there is a lot more that interesting for even Marine lovers. If you are up to some awe-inspiring views of natural scenery from waters, don’t hesitate to be part of the White water rafting adventure in Jinja. Offered along the waters of River Nile, this half-day experience starts in the morning until in the afternoon.

Game drives; If you are a person who loves Wildlife, game drives are a must for you. It includes a drive around the Park suburbs using a vehicle with a pop up roof. Game drives are intended to sight numerous game like; elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, Giraffes and so much more as they graze in the wilderness. This pursuit is common in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison falls National park, Lake Mburo Natiuonal park and Kidepo Valley National Park.

Batwa Trail experience; Batwa people were local hunters and gatherers who migrated from the Ituri forest reserve of Democratic Republic of Congo. For an insight into their culture and ancient life, the Batwa trial is undoubtedly a must visit. This full day experience includes village walks, visit to the Garama caves and cultural performances. This adventure is amongst the other interesting things to do in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Visit Mabamba Swamp; Uganda is a destination not to underrate when it comes to bird watching. It hosts thousands and thousands of unique local and migrate bird species that inhabit its various areas. One of the best spots to go for bird watching excursion is Mabamba swamp. Situated along the shores of Lake Victoria, this swampy is home to the rarely seen species of shoebill stork. It is accessible by boat that takes one to the sighting sites.

Zip lining; To those who prefer more of active adventures, this one is for you. It includes slides over hanged ropes from points of high altitude to low altitudes. With no doubt, this is one of the best options to appreciate the area’s panorama. It is offered in Mabira Forest as you are heading to Jinja.
